Probably the two most common choices in floor surface coverings are hardwood and carpet. Each has a variety of characteristics that make them popular in certain situations.

Hardwood flooring commands more respect generally than carpeting as a design choice.  It is viewed as being "high end" and "luxurious," both because it is a natural material and because it is normally more expensive than carpeting.  Depending on the type of wood selected and how it is finished, hardwood can create a style statement, and create a sense of luxury.  It's also easy to keep clean, low-allergy and long lasting when properly maintained.
